New Hires

Outdoor Odyssey and PE Programs New Hires

Congratulations on being hired!  Once you have officially received an offer of employment from a Cornell Outdoor Education representative, please complete the steps below.  (If you have already taught for COE and are just adding or changing program areas, you do not need to proceed.)

STEP 1 - (Odyssey and PE Staff) CONTACT INFORMATION: Fill out the New Hire Information Form

COE Programs uses a list serve to communicate with the staff. After you enter your information, you should start to see messages about staff training, important dates, events and opportunities. (Only full time staff post to this list.) Also, even though this is the start of your COE career, we're already thinking about after you graduate. COE has 40 years worth of alumni all over the country. We do our best to facilitate communication between this ever-growing community of adventurers.

STEP 2 - (PE Staff Only) CHOOSING YOUR COURSE: Fill out the Spring 2019 Dreamsheet

COE uses an on-line resource to collect information about what courses you'd like to teach. The on-line "Dreamsheet," as we call it, will provide you with a list of all the courses COE offers. Indicate what classes you are interested / able to teach next semester. If you are not sure of our class schedule, just make your best guess. A guess is better than no information at all! There is also a text box for special considerations you'd like to send our way. The compiled information is forwarded to the program coordinators. They assemble the teaching teams for next semester.

If you will be a TA, stop by the COE main office and see the front office manager about filling out a volunteer form, then pick up an i9 form, fill it out and take it to one of the three i9 processing hubs:

1. CALS HR Office, 220 Bruckner Lab- 9:00am-3:00pm; Monday – Friday
2. Library Human Resources, 213 Olin Library- 9:00am-3:00pm; Monday – Friday
3. SC Johnson College of Business, Student Employment/Payroll Office, 135 Statler Hall- 8:30am-3:30pm; Monday – Friday
4. Student & Campus Life, 1140 North Balch Hall- 8:00am-3:30pm; M, Tu, W, F - (not Thursdays)

You must do this in order to be paid. Community members and Ithaca College students should come to the COE main office to fill out an i9. Bring your passport or both your social security card and drivers license.

STEP 4 - (Odyssey and PE Staff) Sign up for New Staff Orientation online!

New Staff Orientation is required for all new PE programs and Odyssey guides.  You'll learn where to get keys, how to check out gear, and some basics of teaching and risk management.  There are three sessions of NSO1 and three of NSO2.  You must attend one session of each.  You can request your preferred date online.

NSO Part 1: 11/11 or 11/12 or 11/13, 5pm to 10pm

NSO Part 2: 11/ 18 or 11/19 or 11/20, 5:00pm - 10:00pm

STEP 5 - (Odyssey and PE Staff) STAFF MANUAL: Download and peruse the Underground Guide to COE

It is somewhat out of date, but we're working on revising it!

You are here because you have a passion for the outdoors and are committed to teaching the best COE course ever. We are psyched to have you, so congratulations and welcome to the team!
